ISTE 2013: After Hours

If you’re attending ISTE 2013 this year, remember that when the conference is in full swing to balance hard work with a little play. Beyond the frigid air conditioning of the convention hall lies an entire city just waiting to be explored.

When you’re able to step back into the daylight, here are a few good places for food, drink and fun in San Antonio.

Food

River WalkGet your day started off right with a cup of coffee from the Frolic and Detour Coffee Bar located on the second floor of the Liberty Bar. In addition to coffee, it also serves simple breakfast items from 7–10:30 a.m. daily.

If you’re looking for a good dinner spot, look no further than Casa Rio located on the San Antonio River Walk. In addition to great food you can enjoy the sites and sounds of the river as canoes, gondolas and paddle boats float by.

Cap off the evening with a late night snack at the Mi Tierra, named the best place for late night eats by “Current,” San Antonio’s free alternative newsweekly, in 2012. Open 24 hours, the restaurant features strolling musicians and classic Tex-Mex dishes.

Drink

Looking to wet your whistle in the Texas heat? Try The Friendly Spot, voted the best bar patio by “Current,” this bar has plenty of seats and nice view to boot.

If you’re in the mood to mingle with locals, Bar America was named the San Antonio’s best dive bar and home of the best jukebox. This place keeps it simple, serving only beer and great music on a classic jukebox that still plays 45s.

For those wanting to try something a little more upscale, head to The Esquire Tavern, voted home of the best cocktails. This place may look old, but its assortment of innovative cocktails keeps things fresh.

Fun

The AlamoIf you’re in San Antonio, the “can’t miss” destination is the Alamo. Walk in the steps of Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone at this historic landmark that now serves as a museum in downtown San Antonio, and is considered the “Shrine of Texas Liberty.”

Or, take a stroll along the San Antonio River Walk to stretch your legs and get some fresh air. Following the San Antonio River through the heart of downtown, the River Walk features restaurants, bars and stores to recharge your batteries, as well as some of the best “people watching” in town.
