myON reader from Capstone Digital Tops 1 Million Students
Personalized Literacy Environment Hits Major Milestone 18 Months After Launch
MINNEAPOLIS (June 21, 2012) – The shift from print to digital books has been well documented, and a study recently released by the Pew Research Center reports that one of five American adults has read an e-book in the past year. Publishers such as Capstone Digital, developer of personalized learning environments for students, have been at the forefront of this shift in the education market. Due in part to exponential growth in the variety and depth of digital resources available, Capstone Digital’s myON reader has surpassed 1 million students 18 months after the literacy platform launched.
“The unprecedented growth of myON reader is an example of the digital transformation taking place in schools nationwide,” said Todd Brekhus, president of Capstone Digital. “Educators value myON reader because it expands students’ access to books and boosts reading engagement. At the same time, students are drawn to the platform because they’re able to choose what they want to read, in a digital environment where they are comfortable.”
Since myON reader launched in January 2011, students have logged on to read more than 3.5 million books. The personalized literacy environment provides access to the largest integrated library of enhanced digital books with reading supports such as an embedded dictionary, highlighting and audio. To personalize the reading experience, myON reader develops a profile for each student based on interests and reading level using the Lexile® Framework for Reading, and generates a recommended book list to encourage students to read more and further improve their reading skills.
“My students, staff and community have embraced myON reader whole-heartedly,” said Kendy Klahr Hinkel, superintendent at Saint Clair Area School District. “Student engagement has exceeded our expectations, and myON reader has become the cornerstone of our literacy framework. In these tough economic times, myON reader has become a resource that my students cannot live without.”
In addition to improving reading achievement, districts across the country are leveraging myON reader as a means to bridge the gap between school and home. The platform can mitigate unsavory realities, such as summer learning loss, by providing students with unlimited access to more than 2,500 digital books when school isn’t in session, including holidays and breaks. A recent example is Florida’s Hillsborough County, where eight community organizations partnered to launch a reading initiative that provides all children from birth to eighth grade with free access to myON reader.
“Educators are realizing that a true measure of reading is more than a quiz score and now are witnessing student engagement at an all-time high, especially among struggling and remedial readers,” said Brekhus. “Those breakthrough moments where students discover a new love for reading are incredibly rewarding, and we’re honored that so many schools and communities choose to make myON reader such an integral part of their literacy initiatives.”
To further support year-round reading, Capstone Digital is sponsoring the 2012 Summer Reading Olympics. More than 500,000 students are participating in this year’s program, which will award prizes to the top summer readers, in addition to the school with the highest participation rate. The goal of the program is for students to read a combined total of 8 million books on myON reader this summer.
A mobile version of myON reader is currently available on Kindle Fire, and Capstone Digital will broaden its mobile reach next week at ISTE 2012.
