VizZle Honors Ohio Special Needs Educators

‘Educator’ and ‘Creator’ of the Year Awards given at OCALI conference

Shaker Heights, Ohio (November 28, 2011) – VizZle, the web-based software for autism education, honored two Ohio educators with “Ohio VizZle Educators of the Year” Awards at the Ohio Center for Autism and Low Incidence (OCALI) Conference in Columbus, Ohio.

Intervention Specialist Michelle May from Canton City Schools in Canton, Ohio, was honored as the Ohio VizZle Creator of the Year. May used VizZle to create interactive, visually supported lessons for an entire year’s worth of English Language Arts lessons for her special needs students, spending much of her own time over the summer to prepare for the year. She then voluntarily shared her work with other educators in her district using the same curriculum and with other VizZle educators across the country via a peer-reviewed shared library.

VizZle also honored Intervention Specialist Carrie LeBeau of the Alliance City School District in Alliance, Ohio, as the Ohio VizZle Educator of the Year. LeBeau was one of only four Ohioans to qualify for the award by having more than 1000 logins to VizZle. Her use of VizZle with her students to not only support academics, but also to help with behavioral challenges like transitioning and successfully negotiating field trips won her the award.

“May and LeBeau represent the countless educators who must continually re-develop and adapt curriculum and classroom activities to engage students who can’t be reached by typical teaching materials,” said Terry Murphy, CEO of Monarch Teaching Technologies. “We are honored to partner with educators like these, in their quest to provide the best possible education for their students.”

Because VizZle was conceived at the Monarch Center for Autism in Shaker Heights, Ohio, and much of the four years spent developing and testing the software took place in Ohio special education classrooms, the VizZle team has a special relationship with Ohio and Ohio educators. It was because of this special relationship that Ohio was chosen for the first VizZle-sponsored “Educator of the Year” Awards.
