Bakersfield, Calif. (Oct. 28, 2008) – Lightspeed Systems Inc., developer of network security software for the education market, and Vericept Corporation, the leading provider of comprehensive compliance and data loss prevention solutions, have partnered to offer one of the most powerful network monitoring and protection products designed for schools.
Lightspeed Systems has signed a distribution agreement with Vericept, which became effective Oct. 1. Under the terms of the agreement, Lightspeed Systems handles sales, licensing, and first level technical support of the Vericept Monitor product to current and prospective customers in the K-12 education market.
Together, the products enable schools to control sensitive data and closely monitor Web activity. “Vericept is an experienced, recognized leader in its industry and has demonstrated its ability to help meet the needs of schools,” said Scott Garrison, president of Lightspeed Systems. “With this strategic alliance, we are able to provide a seamless solution for schools that saves them time, money and headaches. Increasingly, schools are demanding sophisticated network security software to meet regulatory compliance, enforce acceptable use policies, and accommodate instructional needs while addressing safety concerns.”
Total Traffic Control is all-inclusive network security software, offering a full range of network protection features in a single application, including content filtering, spam management, bandwidth management, antivirus protection, extensive reporting capabilities, email archiving and mobile filtering.
Leveraging deep content inspection for all Internet-based communications and attachments, Vericept gives administrators insight into risky network activity, such as the use of anonymous proxies for URL filter avoidance, or the inappropriate use of Web-based mail, social networking sites, and instant messaging. In addition, Vericept identifies the mis-use of student records and personal information that may place a school at risk of non-compliance with federal and state privacy regulations like FERPA.
“We are pleased to be partnering with Lightspeed Systems to ensure the safety and privacy of students in our schools,” said Dave Parkinson, CEO of Vericept Corporation. “This combination of best-in-breed technologies will be a compelling solution for school administrators trying to keep pace with the ways in which students are interacting with the web.”
Vericept’s Monitor product will be integrated with Lightspeed Systems’ Total Traffic Control software. Schools and districts will be able to purchase Vericept Monitor as a stand-alone product, as an add-on module to Total Traffic Control, or as part of a bundled solution. This combined solution will allow administrators to identify inappropriate activity, isolate the proxy being used to bypass filters, and automatically update the Total Traffic Control security proxy category to block the address permanently.
Several school districts are already using Vericept Monitor with Total Traffic Control. “During the school year, we look at Vericept’s reports every day for proxy activity and adult content,” said Andy Harper, network systems manager for Orange Unified School District in Orange, Calif. “Being able to add detected proxies to Lightspeed’s content filter is just what we needed for real-time control of our large network.” Orange Unified has more than 30,000 students and 3,200 staff at 43 sites.
