Emeryville, Calif. (Mar. 19, 2009) – Key Curriculum Press, innovators in mathematics and science education, introduces the First Edition of Living by Chemistry. Designed to improve student performance in chemistry, the curriculum presents scientific ideas in real-life contexts, a strategy that grabs students’ interest and helps them retain knowledge by connecting new ideas to their prior understanding. Living by Chemistry’s investigative approach bridges the achievement gap so that all students have the potential to become high science achievers.

Living by Chemistry is a full-year curriculum designed to encourage students with diverse learning styles to learn real chemistry. Content-rich and highly accessible, Living by Chemistry offers an interactive learning experience for students, involving card games, labs, concept illustrations, and group discussions. Instead of asking students simply to memorize symbols and terms, Living by Chemistry uses activities to help students comprehend key chemistry concepts.

“The goal behind the program is to make high school chemistry more accessible to a diverse pool of students without sacrificing content,” said Dr. Angelica Stacy, Author of Living by Chemistry and Professor of Chemistry at University of California at Berkeley. “Living by Chemistry pushes students to think through ideas and deepen their overall understanding of chemistry.”

The First Edition of Living by Chemistry consists of a student textbook offering activities and contextual readings for six units that explore the chemistry behind alchemy, smells, weather, toxins, fire, and equilibrium. A Teacher Guide is included, which contains student learning objectives, key terms, detailed instructions, and tips for educators. Other ancillaries such as teaching and classroom masters, solutions manual and assessment resources are also available.

Developed as a National Science Foundation project at the University of California, Berkeley, Living by Chemistry is aligned to the Benchmarks for Scientific Literacy, the National Science Educational Standards, and the National Physical Science Standards.
