Professional Development Helps Teachers Use
Dynamic Mathematics to Improve Learning

Emeryville, Calif. (May 29, 2008) – To support math teachers and their use of technology in the classroom, Key Curriculum Press announces two new online professional development courses on using The Geometer’s Sketchpad®. Designed for grades 3-12, The Geometer’s Sketchpad provides students with a tangible, visual way to explore and understand abstract math concepts. Key Curriculum Press’ online professional development courses provide teachers with the skills they need to successfully integrate Dynamic Mathematics® software into their instruction.

The two new online courses, Teaching Elementary Math with The Geometer’s Sketchpad and Teaching Middle School Math with The Geometer’s Sketchpad, are designed for math teachers and instructors of pre-service teachers. By participating in the online courses, teachers will become comfortable with the software both as an investigation tool and as a demonstration tool. In addition, both courses offer pedagogical guidance and promote discussion on the implications of exploring mathematics in a dynamic environment.

Led by a trained moderator, the online courses are divided into six week-long units. Participants have flexibility within each week but are expected to begin and complete the activities during the assigned week. Professional development instruction includes activities, videos and discussion forums for communicating with colleagues.

The six-week courses will begin on the following dates this summer:

  • June 23, 2008 (registration deadline: June 19, 2008)

  • July 14, 2008 (registration deadline: July 10, 2008)

  • July 28, 2008 (registration deadline: July 24, 2008)

The registration fee for each online professional development course is $225. For an additional fee, teachers have the opportunity to receive two professional-level academic credits from the University of California Berkeley Extension upon successful completion of either online course.
