joint venture expand robust educational media library

Silver Spring, Md. (June 30, 2009) – Discovery Education has partnered with several leading organizations to expand the robust media library of its flagship product, Discovery Education streaming. As a result, Discovery Education’s content library will feature more than 5,000 titles with a copyright date of 2000 or later, providing educators and students with relevant and engaging digital media for enhanced instruction and learning.

Through a renewed agreement between Discovery Education and PBS Distribution LLC, a joint venture between the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and its Boston-based affiliate WGBH, hundreds of programs from the PBS collection will be available to educators. PBS Distribution titles currently offered by Discovery Education include, “Ken Burn’s Civil War,” “Frontline,” “American Experience,” “Peep and the Big World,” and “Arthur,” and additional content will be available fall of 2009.

Additional partnerships extend Discovery Education’s digital media library to further engage 21st century students. Through collaboration with the Chicago Sun-Times, Discovery Education will soon feature two new documentaries highlighting President Barack Obama’s historic election and inauguration. The two titles include, “This Is Our Moment: Election Night 2008” and “The Time Has Come: Inauguration Day 2009.”

In addition, through a new agreement with Educational Publishers LLP, a joint venture between Pearson Education and BBC Worldwide, several new series will be added to Discovery Education streaming by the fall of 2009. The two series that will be added are “Wild Pacific” and “Nature’s Most Amazing Events.”

“Our partnerships with these organizations, and more than 150 other publishers, allow Discovery Education to continue our strong commitment to providing educators with the top-quality digital content that engages students in learning across the curriculum,” said Kelli Campbell Senior VP of Content and Product Development, Discovery Education. “In addition to the fantastic content from our partners this year, educators have enjoyed up-to-the-minute programs like ‘The Hudson Plane Crash-What Really Happened’ from Discovery Communications’ collection of content.”

Discovery Education’s Curriculum Development team reviews all videos to ensure appropriateness for K-12 classrooms, creates teaching materials to accompany the videos, and segments the programs into 2-3 minute teachable moment clips. To assist in the process and to ensure impartial review of materials, the Curriculum Development team also works in partnership with external content experts across curriculum areas, including teachers, curriculum supervisors and district-level administrators.

The only digital video-based learning resource scientifically shown to increase academic achievement, Discovery Education streaming enhances curriculum with up to 9,000 videos and 71,000 high-quality digital video clips, all aligned to state standards. Searchable by keyword, content area and grade level, the rich video content and other digital assets from Discovery Education can be easily integrated into curricula to engage today’s students in learning.
