Silver Spring, Md. (October 15, 2007) - Discovery Education Vice President of Marketing Coni Rechner today announced that Discovery Education recently launched the Discovery Media Server to provide educators with quicker and easier access to thousands of educational videos. This new product combines Discovery Education streaming (formerly unitedstreaming), the only video on-demand service proven to enhance student achievement, with reliable servers to create the Discovery Media Server, a media storage and delivery solution built for today’s classroom environment.
The technology needs of schools and districts grow daily, creating increasingly complex networks and greater Internet traffic. The Discovery Media Server eliminates video streaming traffic, as this “plug and play” media storage and delivery solution arrives preloaded with a choice of 7,700 videos in the Discovery Education streaming collection from respected publishers such as Discovery Education, PBS and Scholastic. As each server is configured to automatically update each day with any new content available, users are assured of always having the largest and most current video library accessible to educators.
The Discovery Media Server is based on Dell’s PowerEdge servers and is backed by a Dell warranty. Available in 2TB, 4TB and 9TB configurations, the Discovery Media Server facilitates the presentation of media to wider audiences. Servers can be configured with Discovery Education streaming high-resolution files that offer enhanced picture and sound. Enhanced picture and sound means teachers can share the details of both the smallest cell and the largest planets with large groups of students by moving educational video from the desktop media player to the big screen.
“We have been using Discovery Education streaming for a number of years and our teachers are now downloading more than 100 videos each day to use in their instruction,” said Mike Morrison, Director of Technology Services for Saddleback Valley Unified School District in Mission Viejo, Calif. “We felt the Discovery Media Server was a natural extension of our current program, which enables us to access better quality images and even more titles. In addition, we can host other media we have purchased on the server if we choose.” Today, 1 million educators and 30 million students in more than half of U.S. schools learn with Discovery Education tools and products.
