A Brief History of Jammies

Why do people wear pajamas? Where did they come from, and why do they have such an unusual name?

The word "pajama" derives from the Persian word “payjama” meaning "leg garment." Pajamas were first introduced in England as lounging attire in the 17th century, but went out of fashion. In 1870, they reappeared in the Western world as sleeping attire for men, after returning British colonials brought back the pajamas worn by Hindus. At the beginning of the 20th century, pajamas were introduced as women’s sleepwear.

Traditional pajamas consist of a jacket-and-trousers combination made of soft fabric, such as flannel. In conversational speech, these are often called pjs, jim jams or jammies. In South Asia, and sometimes in South Africa, they are known as night suits.

Given the cold climate in North America, designers began to add “footies” and make warmer pajamas out of heavier, wool fabrics, expanding their widespread popularity. “Footie” pajamas are still worn by children and adults today.

So tonight, when you put on your pajamas, remember that you are wearing a comfortable Middle Eastern garment that’s been around for centuries.

37 Winks Enough?

Many studies recommend students receive 9.25 hours of sleep daily. However, a new study conducted by Eric R. Eide and Mark H. Showalter of Brigham Young University suggests that the optimal amount of shut-eye may be lower than that, depending on the student's age. The study estimates that the amount of sleep needed for maximum academic achievement declines significantly as students age:

• Optimal sleep amount for a 10-year-old ranges from 9 to 9.5 hours.

• At age 12, 8.4 hours of sleep is recommended; at age 16, 7-7.4 hours.

• For an 18-year-old, optimal sack time is slightly less than 7 hours.

Regardless of age, sleep is important.  Be sure to get the appropriate amount each night.

Given increasing demand and stagnant funding levels, however, E-rate requests likely will exceed available funding. In response, Funds For Learning CEO John Harrington penned an open letter to the FCC requesting that the commission take funds away from the Connect America Fund and reallocate them to the E-rate program, which would not raise taxes or fees. E-rate stakeholders and supporters can still sign the online petition before it’s delivered to the FCC in 2012. Read more…
